Course description

Smallholder farmers in Myanmar, especially in the central Dry Zone and the Ayeyarwady Delta, are facing increasingly visible changes in rainfall, temperature and the frequency of disasters. Similar changes are occurring in Cambodia, Laos and Viet Nam, where agriculture still feeds most of the rural population. Climate-smart agriculture (CSA) is an approach that helps farmers maintain productivity while building resilience to climate shocks.

The course has seven chapters, moving from why CSA matters, through assessing climate risk and building an adaptive cropping calendar, water-saving and drought- and flood-resilient techniques, soil and fertilizer management, resilient varieties and farm diversification, to the use of digital tools and early warning systems. Each chapter includes a video lecture, an in-depth reading and a short quiz.

The content is practice-oriented, grounded in the paddy rice, upland cropping and small-scale livestock systems common across the Mekong region, with concrete steps that farmers and extension officers can apply locally right away.
